Simple Things you can do everyday to save this planet
12/11/2008

Making environmentally friendly decisions in everyday life is quite easy. These green tips offer some suggestions for your daily life. We can all make a significant difference to make this planet a better place, only by taking some small steps every day:

  • It can take less than a minute to do something green. Try some of these simple solutions to be on the path to a greener lifestyle.

  • If everyone in the U.S. said "no thanks" to ATM receipts, it would save a roll of paper so long it could circle the equator fifteen times.

  • Change light bulbs from traditional incandescent to compact fluorescent light bulbs. If every American did, it would reduce greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.

  • Turn off the car instead of idling when waiting in a carpool lane for the kids at school. When a car idles for more than 30 seconds, it's actually using more gas, therefore putting more greenhouse gas pollution into the air then if it was turned off.

The thought of a crackling fire in the fireplace may make you feel warm and cozy, but traditional wood-burning fireplaces are major energy wasters. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a blazing fire sends as much as 24,000 cubic feet of air per hour up the chimney, along with about 90 percent of the heat produced by the fire and some of the heat produced by a home’s furnace. Here are some more tips...

  • If every household in the U.S. replaced just one roll of virgin fiber paper towels (70 sheets) with 100% recycled ones, we could save 544,000 trees.

  • Use the Internet to receive and pay household bills - it's a paper-free service.

  • Reuse bread bags and other plastic food bags - they're great for taking a sandwich to work.

  • Tea is all you need to clean wood floors. Brew two teabags in hot water and cool to room temperature. Use with a mop or a cloth on the floors. Rinsing is not needed.

  • Watering your lawn only in the morning or evening. (Water evaporates four to eight times faster during the heat of the day.)
